    Hello, friends of DA.

I recently came across this story on a website of my country’s government’s page. I found it quite interesting, so I decided to translated it.

It’s a story about Fairy Pitta(wiki page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy_Pi… ). In Chinese, Fairy Pitta is called “eight colored bird”. Hope you Enjoy!

Legend has it that in the palace of Heaven, there are some mischievous deities who can’t sit in one place for long. They naughtily play and travel between Heaven and the mortal world. However, the Jade Emperor, ruler of Heaven, was not amused by their misbehavior. One day, he decided to call all of them back and impose punishment upon them. Hearing the emperor’s call, all deities rushed their way into the palace hall. But before the Jade Emperor started talking, the deities reported that they found a Shangri-La in the mortal world where there is neither war, nor hatred. Men work in the farm; women spin and weave in the house. People live in harmony and always wear happy faces. The name of this beautiful island is Taiwan.

The description the deities gave was too good to be true for the Jade Emperor. So he ordered his eighth daughter who still didn’t have any experience in supervising the mortal world to Taiwan for confirmation. He also ordered his eighth general to accompany her for protection. The two deities then flied through piles of cloud, seeking this beautiful island. When they finally landed on Taiwan, they found that the place was exactly as they had been told. The breeze blew under the warm sun, and the green hills and clear water decorated each other in perfect harmony. They also found a small village called “An-Gu-Keng” where people lived in peace, prosperity, and happiness. Warmed by their hospitality, the deities decided to live there.

Three years in the mortal world equals three days in heaven. It was time for the two deities to return and report their findings. However, during those three years, the eighth daughter had married the eighth general and had birthed a child. Marriage of divinity is strictly forbidden, and they could not go back to Heaven now. Grieved by the crime she had committed, the eighth daughter wept. The eighth general comforted her and decided to turn their son into seeds. Combined with the eighth daughter’s tear, he turned the seeds into rain and dropped them upon An-Gu-Keng. The lover then vanished in the sky.

The Grand Supreme Elderly Lord in Heaven was deeply moved by the lover, therefore he turned the eighth daughter and the eighth general into eight colored birds (Fairy Pitta) and allowed them to return to An-Gu-Keng once a year to visit their son.

Thanks to the rain the lover dropped, crops in An-Gu-Keng grow plentiful and prosperous. In appreciation of their grace, villagers of An-Gu-Keng produce wine with rice and use it for worship and keep living in peace and happiness.
